Sample Letter for Opinions about Ashby BART Development

Dear _________________________,                                    Date: __________

The upcoming Ashby BART Development needs your urgent attention and consideration due to the harm done when the station was first developed in the 60’s. At that point in time, the racially and ethnically diverse residents  who lived there, were dispersed around the East Bay. Community and individual family wealth was lost and South Berkeley’s vibrancy was vastly diminished.

Because of this, it is vitally important that the minority and market rate developer chosen for the new development have an equal stake (50/50) in all aspects and decisions. This includes decisions with regard to financial agency. The minority developer understands the community and will have the ability to communicate with the South Berkeley neighbors. It’s the right thing to do when you insist on equal stakes (50/50) between the developers. ____Add your own words_______________

The minority developer proposed an enhanced infrastructure tax district (EIFD) that will raise monies to bring some healing to South Berkeley.  These funds would support early childhood programs, community centers and local economic measures. Insist that money generated from this proposed tax district (EIFD)  be spent on the South Berkeley community and not on repairs to the Ashby BART station infrastructure. I want you to advocate strongly to make this happen.

As you know, important decisions are currently being made about this project. Don’t forget about the people and the unique neighborhood of South Berkeley, its history and future. I urge you to make a solid stand. Do the right thing and advocate strongly for this community.

Thank you.
